Counselling-Psychotherapy

I trust that we all have, within us, what it takes to be well and have a fulfilling life. All we need is to simply allow our Self to be. “Simply”? Often, it is easier said than done.

This is where Counselling and Psychotherapy can translate that professional collaborative working relationship. In that confidential space you can find the courage to explore and understand yourself, feel supported, tell your story, be listened to, reduce the suffering you experience and find respect and acceptance. In that context your Self can, hopefully, begin to shine and heal.

To support you I use a humanistic person-centred approach nourished by various tools such as transactional analysis, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Internal Family System (https://ifs-institute.com).

Couple therapy

Fundamentally a couple are two distinct people who have joined together to form an intimate relationship. I am committed to helping each individual within the couple to express their doubts, fears, frustrations and worries, explore any conflicts between the partners or support them to improve communication and interactions to strengthen their relationships. Initially I will meet with the couple for a joint consultation where they are invited to give a broad outline of their difficulties. Although the therapy would generally mean that the couple will attend therapy sessions together it is possible that I would suggest one or 2 individual sessions.

Trauma results from “an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being” (https://www.samhsa.gov). Trauma is characterised by the inability to remain in the present (Van Der Kolk, https://www.besselvanderkolk.com) as multiple experiences of threatening situations heightens the sensitivity to danger and magnifies the stress response (Fisher, 1999, https://janinafisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/stabilize.pdf).

EMDR psychotherapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful therapeutic approach that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. EMDR therapy is an eight-phase treatment.  Eye movements (or other bilateral stimulation) are used during one part of the session to help the clients process the memory and disturbing feelings.
